Discussion 6 - Educational Games for Kids

 Hello Gamers,

There is a website (https://www.education.com/games/) that I would like for each of you to evaluate that covers games from preschool to 5th Grade. If you have children from any of those grade levels, please give them to opportunity to find a game that provides them both a fun and an educational experience. Please share your children's experiences with everyone. I look forward to reading your discussions!

  1. I chose a coin recognition and counting game for my 2nd grade "Strong Ranger" because coins are whooping his butt! He told me the nickel is his "Arch enemy" today... As for the game experience, he actually had fun and mad some good connections on how to remember and recall the coins and their worth. Thanks for the help!

  2. Charles,
In evaluating the educational games website, it seems to be very beneficial and educational for students to learn math, reading and writing, and even typing. This seem like very entertaining while having a great educational value for kids. They are basically learning by interacting with the games and are acquiring great skill sets while doing so. I had my godson try out the coding game (Learning Coding with Roly) and he seemed to have enjoyed it a lot. He liked the fact that the game allowed him to follow a sequence of events in dragging and dropping visual code blocks to help Roly navigate his way to the apple. Thanks for sharing.

All of the math applications are great. My fifth grader has been having a hard time with all math so this will really help her improve her math scores. I love games that are fun while you are learning. It makes it easier to get to do the games if they enjoy playing it versus learning in a traditional way. Thanks for the great post.

  4. Charles,
I had my daughter play the second grade math game and she enjoyed it. She struggles with Math so I had to do a lot of scaffolding. That said, this is a great website for her to get more help and have fun while doing it. Best of all it's free. Thanks for the share. I will be continuing to use it in the future.

  5. Pitt,
I had my daughter try this out and she loved it but quickly became frustrated. The preschool games seemed a little advanced, but she definitely enjoyed them, while it lasted. You have to have an account to play the games and the free account is limited in how many games you can play in a sitting. Well with a four year old’s attention span and desire to switch back and forth between games she had exhausted her daily limit in under five minutes. I watched her play and the instructions seemed simple enough but there were a lot of things that flashed on the screen and grabbed her attention which she proceeded to click. Since she cannot read yet, that made following the verbal instructions difficult because she got to hear them once and then they were gone. Also, some of the games are only available if you purchase the premium version. I was not prepared for that kind of commitment to evaluate the site.

  6. It seems like every child that played a game from the website enjoyed it. Imagine if we, as a society, applied more emphasis on these types of games versus blood, violence, and gore. We tend to be busy with life that we forget to monitor what our children are exposed to. I am guilty of this and I don't realize just how much violent crap there are in big enterprise video game corporations. It is kinda sad, but it is reality.

  7. Charles,
I did another go around with my Nephew and he really is enjoying the games. I like the fact that these games are educational and are non-threatening and give children to learn and promotes life-long learning and a positive learning environment for children. The only thing I saw was that the games were basic and if you really wanted to explore the full gamut of games then one would have to upgrade and pay extra to be able to gain access to the full library they have. Nonetheless, I think these games are necessary to enhance our children’s learning experience and we need to continue to develop their knowledge by any means necessary. Also, having technology assist us in doing so is a great way to have children engaged while they learned. Great Post.
